How to set your winder

Turns per day (TPD). An automatic movement needs a set number of rotations a day to stay wound, usually between 650 and 1,800. Too few and the watch slowly stops; more than needed adds nothing. Start at the lowest program that keeps your watch running.

Direction. Some movements wind clockwise, some counter-clockwise, many both ways. If you are unsure, choose bidirectional: it suits every automatic movement.

Magnetism. Keep the winder away from speakers, phones and other magnets. A magnetized watch can gain or lose several minutes a day and needs a watchmaker to demagnetize it.

Under each cup, two knobs set the direction (A, B, C or off) and the turns per day: 650, 750, 850, 1000 or 1950. Check the figures your watch maker publishes and match each cup to them.

When a cycle ends, the motor brings the watch back to the 12 o'clock position. A drop-down glass front keeps dust off. Unplug before cleaning, wipe the case with a soft, dry cloth, and keep it out of direct sunlight.

Eight cups, in two rows of four, each take one automatic watch. The holders adjust from 6.75 to 8.5 in (17 to 21.5 cm), so measure the inside of your closed strap or bracelet: below 6.75 in, the watch may sit loose.

It suits a collection of five to eight automatics, leaving free cups if you own fewer today. The case runs on a plug-in AC adapter, so place it on a chest of drawers near a wall outlet.

The lid is glass. Clean it with a soft, dry cloth.
Can a winder damage my watch?
Not when it is set correctly. Choose the turns per day and the direction your movement needs (see Winder settings); if in doubt, bidirectional at the lowest program is the safe choice. Keep the winder away from speakers and other magnets.
How many slots do I need?
Count the automatic watches you rotate but do not wear every day: those are the ones a winder keeps running.
